Favorites > Lists > Children's books for all to enjoy
These books have all been published as children's or in some cases YA books, but I enjoy them still, though my childhood is long gone! A good book is a good book.
[As I said before, there's no point in reiterating a lot of description - Amazon does it so much better than me; so I've provided links (the images, or text links where no image is available) to the appropriate pages in Amazon.]
Joy Chant
Joy Chant has written others, and I enjoy them all, but for some reason this is my favorite. She's not well-known, but deserves to be. I was interested to see that although she doesn't have many reviews on Amazon, almost all of them give the book 5 stars!
Susan Cooper
The Dark is Rising
Over Sea, Under Stone
The Dark is Rising
Greenwitch
The Grey King
Silver on the Tree
I didn't read Over Sea, Under Stone until I'd read the others, and I'm not sure whether I'd have read the series if I'd started there. It's much more of a "children's book" than the others. If you're not a child, my recommendation is to start with The Dark is Rising - it's quite self-contained; it's not until Greenwitch that you connect with the events in Over Sea.
Ursula Le Guin
The Earthsea Cycle
A Wizard of Earthsea
The Tombs of Atuan
The Farthest Shore
There are more in the series, but this is the original trilogy.
Madeleine L'Engle
A Wrinkle in Time
The first, and my favorite, in a series of several books about these people (not a series in the sense of a continuing story). Madeleine L'Engle has also written a lot of other books, especially at the YA level - ie growing up, adolescent angst type stuff; by which I don't mean anything offensive. I love that stuff, and my very favorite is:
The Young Unicorns
J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
