Looking for books that are fun? These are books light, entertaining, and often downright funny (although the funniest books I've put in the Funny Book list!).

[As I said before, there's no point in reiterating a lot of description - Amazon does it so much better than me; so I've provided links (the images, or text links where no image is available) to the appropriate pages in Amazon.]

Fantasy

Piers Anthony

has written so many books I don't know where to start, but I guess I'm thinking of his Xanth books, here (of which he's written a zillion). Here's a couple to click on to start you off:

Rachel Caine

Chick-lit fantasy about weather wardens and djinn:

Ill Wind

Heat Stroke

Chill Factor

Windfall

J.D Rowling

Well, everyone knows the Harry Potter books, but they deserve a mention, because they are such fun. The clickable image is for the 5th book, chosen for no reason except that it seemed a good place to start if by some miracle you have refrained from reading these books, and want to read about them.

Jonathan Stroud

These, like Harry Potter, are supposedly children's books, but they're fun, and I enjoyed them:

The Bartimaeus Trilogy

The Amulet of Samarkand

The Golem's Eye

Ptolemy's Gate

Science fiction

GordonDickson

has written lots of books, many of them quite serious and thought-provoking. But many of them are quite light, and some are played strictly for laughs. Here's some fun ones:

Spacial Delivery

Spacepaw

Gremlins, Go Home

The Dragon and the George

The Dragon Knight

(there are several more in this series)

Larry Niven

Flight of the Horse

World of Ptavvs

The Magic Goes Away

and with David Gerrold:

The Flying Sorcerers

George R.R. Martin

Has written some absolutely wonderful books, which are dramatic, and often thought-provoking. But he's also written one or two which are just fun:

Tuf Voyaging

L.E. Modesitt, Jr.

Don't know anything about this writer; have never come across anything else by them. But I loved this one:

The Fires of Paratime

(the clickable image is of a newer book that apparently contains a longer version of The Fires of Paratime, as well as an earlier book; I haven't read it, but now I know about it, I will definitely try to get my hands on it!)

J. Michael Reaves

Ditto for this writer - never found anything else by him, but I loved this:

Darkworld Detective

Clifford Simak

The Goblin Reservation

James Schmitz

I do in fact have three of this writer's books, but my favorite is:

The Witches of Karres

Roger Zelazny

and I love all of Zelazny's many books, but two stand out as having the requisite "fun" element:

Doorways in the Sand

Lord of Light
